Our History

building.jpgWe are so proud of our history as members of Trinity. In all we do we are striving to fulfill our mission statement: Trinity United Methodist Church exists to make and nurture disciples of Jesus Christ.

Trinity’s history dates back more than 100 years. Although that history is a bit sketchy, documents point to an 1887 start on the very site on which the church sits today. A marker outside the Narthex commemorates this important date.

history_church.jpgTrinity began on one acre of land purchased for $100. The one-room, white-frame, box-style church faced US 21 and featured screens for Sunday school rooms, a pot-bellied stove and a pump organ.

Over the years, several improvements were made to the building. Due to a growing number of youth, the mid 1940s brought the need for additional Sunday school rooms. The rooms were enclosed on each side of the entrance. A major remodel in 1949 turned the front of the building to face Blythewood Road.

In the early 1960’s, leaders of the church realized a need for a still bigger, better facility. At that time, there were only 20 active adult members. Yet, by the fall of 1963, Trinity had a new chapel and east educational wing. (The west wing wasn’t completed until 1977.)

Blythewood continued to grow as it does today. By 1989, efforts were underway for a new sanctuary. The first service in what is now our sanctuary was held October 14, 1990. The sanctuary seats around 350.

Throughout the mid 90’s, Trinity’s membership was beginning to keep pace with the rapid growth of subdivisions, schools and businesses in the area. As a result, in 1996, the Christian Life Center was born and is a hub of community activity today.

Trinity continues to grow and thrive today, fulfilling its mission of creating and nurturing disciples of Jesus Christ.
